175 MPH

"You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself one."
JAMES A. FROUDE

Just as most of the human brain is submerged and subconscious, so much of the human character also takes place “below the surface.” Let me explain. I was with 35 students in the midst of a yoga retreat in Tulum, Mexico when a Category 5 Hurricane (Wilma) formed pretty much overnight. We fell asleep knowing it was barely a Category 1 hurricane only to wake up and discover it had jumped 4 categories and was barreling toward Tulum with 175mph sustained winds. Our hotel/retreat center had no evacuation plan yet we were faced with a massive and immediate evacuation. What was so interesting is that the people on the trip who under normal conditions seemed a bit freakish and strange...were very calm and collected in crisis. Whereas many of the people on the trip who seemed on the surface to totally have it together...ended up freaking out under duress.

When we fail to explore our inner nature, the first moment of crisis is like opening a crack in the cage containing a desperate human spirit gasping for life. However, when one is consistently exposed to the full spectrum of life’s emotion and sensation, their inner nature is tested and revealed. In other words, the inner being has a chance to breathe, feel and sense life. So appreciate your challenges and struggles…they are vigorous exercise for the soul. As Kahlil Gibran said, “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.”
