Playing Catch with Your Soul
“Ours is a world where people don’t know what they want and are willing to go through hell to get it.” –Don Marquis
We so often think of success as hard work, big breaks, an increasing bank account…all of which are fair and true yet exhaustingly old and boring. Let’s consider the success formula proposed by John Maxwell in his great new book Talent is Never Enough. Maxwell discusses that “every person is capable of doing something better than the next 10,000 people.” That something is called your STRENGTH ZONE or what others might call “the sweet spot.” The sweet spot changes everyday, if not just a little bit. So to stay in the sweet spot, you want a daily moment of reflection.
You might think of the sweet spot as the bullseye in a game of archery: shoot for a target and the closer you come to bullseye, the stronger you become. The yogis teach that finding the sweet spot is more like finding the ball in a game of catch. Holding your hand in one place and wondering why you can't catch the ball is a common struggle in life. The truth is... you just gotta adapt, you gotta get your uniform dirty. High, low, a one-hopper in the dirt, the backhanded diving grab…your strength will remain of the same cloth and shape but will always be evolving. So take the time to step out of your routines, away from your computer, off the beaten path and “play some catch” with your soul. Know who you are, why you are, where you are. “The world stands aside to let anyone pass who knows where he or she is going.” (David Star Jordan)
