The Secret To Unlocking Your Potential
“Consider what was known about the weak, erratic trickles of electricity 150 years ago and compare that to the trillion-watt networks that run today’s power-hungry world.”
--Dean Radin of the Consciousness Research Library at the University of Nevada
Are there yet-to-be discovered, hidden sources of human power? Maybe you’ve heard of the phenomenon that is Daniel Tammet, the first known autistic savant able to communicate to doctors the inner-workings of his brain. Like most autistic savants, Tammet is a human calculator who can instantaneously solve any math equation. Ask him 55,692 X 832,399, and he’ll know the answer in a matter of seconds. In his great book BORN ON A BLUE DAY, Tammet describes how he doesn’t actually compute the numbers when arriving at one of his calculations. Rather, he associates shapes and colors with numbers; the shapes appear in his mind and spontaneously morph into other shapes ; the new shapes give him the answer. Crazy!! Tammet's ability hints at the hidden mysteries and powers that lie in the depths of the brain. But if you’re not autistic, how do you access those powers?
In the book FLOW, author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi discusses the difference between pleasure and enjoyment. Pleasure is when you do something that does not require any “investment of psychic energy.” Pleasure is tuning out to a great meal or vegging out to your favorite TV show. But enjoyment requires an “unusual investment of attention.” Enjoyment is putting your heart and soul and every ounce of your being into something. When one achieves enjoyment, they reach a state of “flow” where they transcend time, lose track of the self, merge into a sense of oneness, and tune out all distractions. When you achieve “flow,” you are locked and loaded into a cannon of passion and joy.
The Bhagavad Gita teaches that “only the fool whose mind is deluded by egotism considers himself to be the doer.” In other words, when overcoming the ego, you tap a hidden source of power that is the greatest high, the supreme buzz, the absolute ecstasy. But you don’t have to give away your goals, money, or possessions to overcome the ego. As Csikszentmihalyiha so finely researched, you best transcend the ego by taking things one step deeper. It’s easy to wander thru life starting and ending your day with small pleasures. Heck...that would be a fine day and a fine life. But to truly engage a passion or activity is to unlock a hidden source of power that most humans will never know. As John Maxwell said, “A great leader's courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.”
