Get Your Dream On!

“Dreams are answers to questions we haven't yet figured out how to ask.” ~X-Files

You know the feeling. You are starving and there’s a giant bag of potato chips calling your name. If you could just wait a little longer and hold out for something more nutritious than potato chips. But those potato chips offer instant gratification. You want ‘em, you need ‘em, you must have ‘em NOW! You break down and bust open the bag. They taste great going down but afterwards you feel full and disgusting. Is it just me or is the Rumble with Ruffles, the Doritos Dilemma, the Tingles for Pringles a universal struggle?!?!

Just as your belly has a need for food (both junk food and nutritious food), the brain has a need for dreaming (both meaningful dreaming and junk dreaming). Let me explain. Dreaming nourishes by allowing you to process the rhythms of life while finding some order in the madness. It satisfies your appetite for meaning, harmony, and beauty. Dreaming can be triggered by deep sleep, great storytelling, or a walk in nature. But when we replace these rich forms of dreaming with a cheap substitute, we pay the price.

Nowadays, the TV often supplies our source of storytelling. As Stephen Buhner says, “The level of meaning [in TV] is so shallow, people begin to live more and more in a world with less and less access to deep meaning.” Just something to consider. If you are filling up by junk dreaming on 30 minute TV shows about horny roommates, police drug busts, and amateur talent contests (my favorite), THIS could be the source of your loneliness, depression, magnetic relationship with the bong, constant desire for Johnny Walker, and general lack of purpose. So give this a try. Turn off the TV, open the windows, take off your clothes, bust out your hair dryer, and set your mind free! "The dreamers are the saviors of the world." (James Allen)
