“These days people seek knowledge, not wisdom. Knowledge is of the past, wisdom is of the future.” –Vernon Cooper
I heard a song on the radio but the song was not available to download on the internet. A little OCD kicked in and I really wanted that song. So I made my first trip to the music store in years. What initially seemed like a hassle became a real treat. I missed perusing the aisles and browsing at the album covers. Sadly to say, it felt “old school” to be at the music store. Sometimes convenience deprives us of experience. As purchases and images and video streams are just “one click away,” you figure why bother driving somewhere when i can just do it online?!
There is no substitute for firsthand exposure to color, beauty, sensation, experience. “Life is the only real counselor; wisdom unfiltered through personal experience does not become a part of the moral tissue.” (Edith Wharton)
Here are my suggestions:
1. Go back to the music store every so often and purchase an entire CD, not just one track online.
"It's the thrill of going to the store; you can't wait till that artist's release date, taking the wrapper off the CD and putting the CD in to see what it sounds like. I've seen those little sissies on TV, talking about how 'The working people should just get music for free,' I've been a working person. I never could afford a computer, but I always bought and supported the artists that I liked. I always bought a Tupac CD, a Biggie CD, a Jay-Z CD. If you can afford a computer, you can afford to pay $16 for my CD." -Eminem
2. Rather than downloading images online, go outside and experience something beautiful like a sunset, a full moon on a starry night, or the Fall breeze.
“The perception of beauty is a moral test.” Thoreau
3. Don't kill a bug in your home.
Smashing a bug is an indicator that you value convenience over experience. There's a great book Intelligene in Nature by Jeremy Narby. He writes about the amazing intelligence in some of the smallest critters. Read the book and you'll think twice before you smash a bug. Yes you might be scared of creepy critters. But by saving the bug, you are placing a value on life!
