Hook-ers

"Those who are immune to the seductions of the physical world become our social and spiritual heroes." -Carolyn Myss

This past weekend, I went fishing for the first time in a long time. Let's consider the plight of the little fish: 1) It's swimming around freely in the lake. 2) It sees a little piece of food and chomps down for a snack, only to suddenly have a hook gashing through its lip. 3) It's swept out of the lake before being attached to another bigger hook. 4) It's cast back into the lake as bait for a bigger fish. 5) It tries to swim away before realizing it's hooked for good.

What did that little fish get itself into by snacking on that little piece of food? Such is the human experience. Some are able to swim freely in the lake and avoid chomping on the bait. But some always seem to go after the bait and endure a plight similar to the little fish.

"The bait" for human beings consists mainly of lust, anger, and greed. Let's face it: If you're not a sucker for sex, you might struggle with road rage. If you can keep your emotions in check, you might have an obsession with material objects that puts you deep into dept. We chomp, chomp, chomp and when we get hooked, we're screwed. And when we're screwed (lusty sex), we're hooked...if y'know I mean.

So how do you make like the fish who outsmarts the fisherman and never gets suckered into chomping on the bait? Mind, body, and spirit each have their own agenda and on occasion, they need to be synchronized. Someone said, "Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body." Lust is a body thing, not a soul thing. When mind, body, spirit are connected and united, you're not as likely to "shtoop" the hot young sex symbol who could ruin your marriage and hurt your children. The best way to synchronize is simply to breathe consciously. The sound of the breath is the only language understood by mind and body and spirit. When you wake up, take a few deep breaths. When you're falling to sleep, take a few deep breaths.

Krishnamacharya said, "Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale, and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God."
